The City Sports Bar & Restaurant (The City), your local and family-owned restaurant, has shut down.
We want to thank everyone for their patronage through the years, and especially these local alumni chapters in Oregon:
University of Ohio
University of Illinois
University of Wisconsin
University o Iowa
University of North Carolina
Duke
Clemson
Florida State University
Kansas University
University of Missouri
Notre Dame
Georgetown
Washington State University
University of Oregon
Auburn
University of Georgia
Louisiana State University
We are sorry to leave these fine organizations without a home, especially with March madness around the corner.
Too many businesses in Portland, OR are going out of business because of the economy.
However, The City's loyal customers had helped us weather these financially tough times.
We all knew the cold war wasn’t over.
The commies had sub-planted a communist entity in the form of The Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC).
Definitions of communism range from:
Their wreckless and irresponsible behaviors will undoubtedly place Portland in a thicker cloud than we are already in with Beau Breedlove and our city’s head man (pun intended).
For restaurant owners, it is fight or flight with the OLCC. The OLCC has effectively shut down restaurants and bars catering to the 20-30 year olds (Bettie Ford's, Voodoo, H20...).
For the downtown Portland denizens, it’s flight. It is the process of de-intellectualizing a city. These denizens are the future of our city. They are deferring to Seattle, taking with them their college degrees and the promising future of Portland.
The OLCC is preying on another Portland historic restaurant in The Greek Cusina.
Please speak out against the OLCC through any channel you may have. Join our anti-OLCC campaign forum HERE.

This summer we will see the 20th anniversary of the (almost legal) Oregon Brewers Festival, an event that has played a substantial role in turning Portland into Beervana. Unfortunately, one group won't be there to celebrate: kids.
After 19 years of promoting the Oregon Brewers Festival as a community event, we regret that we will not be allowed to have minors under the age of 21 on the festival premises in 2007. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission has stipulated no minors be on-site, citing OLCC Rule
845-006-0340
(7) (a) in which "eating predominates" and the premise must not have a "drinking enviroment". In order to view this rule, please go to here and click on "Laws and Rules". Click on OLCC Law Book. This will open up a PDF file for viewing.
Among the great travesties in Oregon public policy, this doesn't rate very high, but it's still a seriously bad call. When Oregon's microbreweries began to rise to prominence in the 1980s, drinking moved from the dark, windowless caves of the corner taverns into well-lit, homey brewpubs. Families started coming, and the focus turned from getting smashed to enjoying an artisinal product.
For kids, seeing their parents drink responsibly in a normal environment demystifies it and removes the allure of the forbidden. I don't doubt that there are parents in Oregon who think that taking their children to a beer festival exposes them to indecent behavior. But there are certainly others who think it's a healthy celebration of local culture--and fun, to boot. The OLCC has taken the choice away from parents, many of whom will now skip their Saturday afternoon trip to Waterfront Park.
I don't know if it will do any good, but Fest organizers encourage you to contact the OLCC and let them know how you feel:
If you disagree with the OLCC's decision, then please contact executive director StephenPharo and let him know:

Let kids come to the Fest!

I just took the OLCC class for the 3rd time since moving to Oregon. What a bunch of B.S. The fact that I can get sued over something a grown person chose to do is absurd. As if it weren't for me, these people wouldn't find a way to drink anyway. Like I just shanghai'd their innocent asses right off the street, held a .38 to their heads, and commanded them to drink rotgut. Ooohkay. You may hate California, I'm not big on it either, but at least there you can do your job in peace without dealing with this crap. There if you fuck up it's on you, like it should be. Since I scored 100% on all 3 tests (whoop de do, like it's so hard), I'll spare you those questions and give you a test I came up with on my own.
#1. The OLCC is:
A. A great waste of our tax dollars
B. Hypocrites, seeing as the head of the OLCC got a DUI 2 years ago
C. Wannabe cops sent out to spy on people having a good time
D. All of the above
#2. The liability law is:
A. A way for people to get out of being held responsible for their actions by blaming their bad decisions on others
B. A way for the state to shut down those bad, evil bars they so like to drink at
C. A way for the state to bleed more cash out of bars and servers since taxing them up the yin yang isn't good enough for them
D. All of the above
#3. When an OLCC agent asks to see your server's permit you should:
A. Laugh at them
B. Stop what you're doing and go smash their windshield
C. Tell them what assholes they are for working for the OLCC
D. Laugh at them, then tell them what assholes they are for working for the OLCC while your barback smashes their windshield (tip him extra for that)
I'm sure you don't need an answer key. By the way, does anyone know how to get one of those Fuck the OLCC shirts? My work requires we wear all black, and that will do nicely.
